The load capacity indicates what load a forklift, a fork, or an attachment can safely pick up or carry under specified conditions.
It is usually given in kilograms (kg) or tons (t). However, a specification of, for example, 2,500 kg does not automatically mean that a load of 2,500 kg may be picked up under all conditions.
This is because the load capacity is always related to other factors – especially the load center distance.
What does the load center distance have to do with the load capacity?
It is not only how heavy a load is that matters, but also where its center of gravity is located.
The further the center of gravity of the load is from the fork heel, the greater the leverage. This increases the stress on the forks and the vehicle.
Therefore, you will find information on forks such as:
Load capacity: 2,500 kg at 500 mm load center distance
The stated load capacity therefore applies to the defined conditions and must not be considered in isolation from the load center distance.
Note: The further forward the load center moves, the greater the leverage.
Fork load capacity: What does the specification mean?
For a pair of forks, the stated load capacity generally refers to both forks together, provided they are used as intended and loaded evenly.
If a pair of forks, for example, has a load capacity of 2,500 kg at a 500 mm load center distance, this means with even load distribution:
2,500 kg total load capacity = 1,250 kg per fork
Uneven loading of the two forks, however, can lead to significantly higher stress on a single fork.
Forklift, forks, and attachment – which load capacity counts?
A common misconception: Particularly strong forks automatically increase the load capacity of the forklift. This is not the case.
When transporting loads, all components involved must be suitable for the respective load. These include in particular:
- the forklift
- the forks
- the fork carriage
- any attachments used
The load capacity of the overall system cannot be set higher than the permissible load capacity of its components to be considered accordingly. In addition, attachments, a changed load center, or other influencing factors can reduce the actually available load capacity of the vehicle.
