What is a laser safety class?

Lasers are categorized into different laser classes according to the potential hazard they pose. The classification helps to assess the potential hazard from accessible laser radiation and to derive necessary protective measures from it.

The basis for the classification of laser products is DIN EN IEC 60825-1 or internationally IEC 60825-1. The standard defines a classification system for laser products according to the possible hazard from optical radiation.

The various laser classes range from Class 1 to Class 4. They differ in terms of accessible laser radiation and the associated potential hazard.

What does laser safety class 1M mean?

For a Class 1M laser, the accessible laser radiation is harmless to the eye under reasonably foreseeable conditions.

However, there is an important exception: If optical instruments such as magnifying glasses, binoculars or other collecting optical aids are used, the hazard can increase.

Such optical instruments can direct or focus a larger proportion of the laser radiation into the eye. Therefore, the classification as Class 1M must not be equated with unrestricted harmlessness in every conceivable application situation.

Why are there different laser classes at all?
